A life without stories would be no life at all. And stories bind us, do they not, one to another, the living to the dead, people to animals, people to land?” For the first time, here is the complete, authentic and classic glowing stories of the past, of men who knew their waterfowl when the birds were so plentiful that when they rose they blackened out the sky; when there were no closed season and no bag limits and spring shooting and baiting were allowed; when punt guns, sink boxes and live decoys were prevalent. It tells the story of the old timers, for they have voices we will never hear, so they speak to us through their written words and images. They not only teach us about the past; they also urge us to pay attention to the present, to identify what’s worth saving by telling us the tragic story of the birds’ decline. They would tell us time is running out. In addition to the written stories of the most famous waterfowling grounds in any hemisphere, this book gives a pictorial history of over 150 vintage images of old-time gunning and an illustrated record of successful old-time methods and techniques employed by waterfowlers on this continent. To future generations, it presents as accurate a picture as possible of how and why our once bountiful waterfowl were hunted. No one can read this definitive treatise without gaining a wealth of factual information and a better comprehension of one of the most important wildlife resources on our continent and the way in which it was hunted. A glimpse at the Table of Contents will indicate the tremendous scope and breath of this book, as the 54 chapters contain a generous store of fascinating and spellbinding reading. Many months and years of careful research, along with over fifty years of duck hunting, were involved in writing this book. It is a compilation of this, while also utilizing the information from my previous waterfowling books. It is hoped that it is of substantial interest to all of the present-day gunners and, especially, to conservationists and a must have for any outdoor enthusiast. I know you will receive personal fulfillment from reading this book as you connect with American natural splendor dear to the heart of waterfowlers, as the chapters are full of romanticism and factual information. WATERFOWLING VIGNETTES is a limited first edition of 500 copies, signed and numbered, softbound covers, 8.5 x 11, 54 chapters, 510 pages with over 150 vintage images. It is destined to become a collector’s item because of its importance, desirability, demand, scarcity, and its breath and wealth of information. Therefore, the price will escalate like all of my other out-of-print books have, especially my limited edition books. PRICE: $100.00, plus $6.00 for shipping and handling, PLUS TAX if applicable. In stock to buy. No returns on this book.

Arkansas Duck Hunting Book by Luther Wayne Capooth, M.D. Featuring several chapters that describe what it meant to be a duck hunter in the olden and golden days. Images in this book depict never-to-be-forgotten sights of ducks blackening out the sky and water at Claypool's wild acres, Wilcox's lakes, Freudenberg's and Tindall's reservoirs, Price's lake on the White River NWR, and more. No state had so many duck hunters, legends, and case-hardened disciples of duck hunting, which left us with treasured memories of duck hunting. How many of you know about the Arkansas vs. Louisiana grudge quackoff, where the two states went toe-to-toe or mouth-to-mouth in a duck-calling contest in duck blinds, with judges, with wild ducks being the target? Who won? Find out in this book! All out-of-print books are in “as new condition,” which means the covers are bright and there are no damages to covers or text pages and no shelf-wear. PRICE is based on the book being out-of-print, rarity, collectability, demand, subject matter, limited first edition or an additional edition, softcover vs. hardcover with dust jacket, how hard is it to find one on the secondary/out-of-print market, and condition of book. PRICE: $100.00, plus $6.00 for shipping and handling, 362 pages, 8.5 x 11 softcover with over 100 images, in “as new condition,” published in 2018. In stock for purchasing. This is the waterfowling story of early modern man long since dead, as he followed migrating waterfowl from the Old World to the New World, where his descendants witnessed the arrival of the White man. So listen to the words of early modern man as The Mississippi Flyway: The Ancient Ones offers an unforgettable account of the birth and technological advancement of waterfowling in all its dynamics and glory—long before firearms were invented. It begins some 40,000 years ago with early modern man and continues to the Paleo-Indians, to the Mound Builders, to the Native Americans, while also looking back at the old timers from the arrival of the first White man in the New World to the first half of the twentieth century. It is the story of a time that can never again repeat itself—of an era of waterfowl abundance in the Mississippi Flyway that has gone forever. If you are young, the scenes depicted in The Mississippi Flyway; The Ancient Ones will fire your blood to strive for the great trophies in the sky; if you are old it will thrill you with memories of a past which shall seem to you brighter and better than anything the later years can yield. After receiving numerous requests for my out-of-print Waterfowling America set of books, I decided to update the history of the waterfowling states of the Mississippi Flyway and publish The Mississippi Flyway: The Ancient Ones. Every state is represented except Alabama and Kentucky. This book represents the best from The Golden Age of Waterfowling and the best from Waterfowling America, Vol. II—updated and rebranded to offer you The Mississippi Flyway: The Ancient Ones," which is almost unobtainable in the aftermarket. PRICE is based on the book being out-of-print, rarity, collectability, demand, subject matter, limited first edition or an additional edition, softcover vs. hardcover with dust jacket, how hard is it to find one on the secondary/out-of-print market, and condition of book. All out-of-print books are in “as new condition,” which means the covers are bright and there are no damages to covers or text pages or shelf-wear. PRICE:$500, plus $6.00 for shipping and handling, limited first edition of 1,250 copies, published in 2013, softcover, 8.5 x 11, 614 pages with over 100 images, and in “as new” condition. No additional copies were printed after the 1,250 were sold. Very rare to find on out-or-print book market. In stock to purchase. One of the foremost writers on waterfowling history, Wayne Capooth, M.D. chronicles the colorful accounts of waterfowling in the olden days. Let him take you on a journey back in time in Volume Three to witness waterfowling as practiced in the Upper Mississippi Flyway, the Central Flyway and the Pacific Flyway. Visit Sandusky Bay, Lake St.Clair, Lake Koshkonong, Devils Lake, Spirit Lake, the Platte River, Humboldt Bay, Suisun Marsh, Great Salt Lake, the Columbian River, the Klamath region of Oregon and many other waterfowling areas. This three-volume set covers the entire United States, state by state, if that state had a significant waterfowling history. Vol. I covers the Eastern seaboard; Vol. II covers the lower Mississippi Flyway states with Texas included in this Volume. Vol. III covers the Pacific and Central Flyway states and the upper states in the Mississippi Flyway above Missouri. See TC for content for each Volume. Waterfowl hunting was and still is a major form of recreation in the United States. Starting as subsistence hunting and market hunting, it reached its peak as a recreational sport in 1939 with over 44,000 waterfowl sportsmen and nearly 3,000 waterfowl hunting clubs and privately owned hunting marshes. Waterfowling evolved from subsistence to sport after the Civil War brought prosperity and affluence to broad segments of the population. Waterfowl, considered a delicacy by many, was in great demand for the table. With the rapid expansion of industrialization, increasing numbers of people found themselves with the means and leisure to engage in waterfowling as recreation. The construction of the railroads made the transportation of waterfowl to northern markets faster; while at the same time made travel for sport hunters easier. Market gunners and guides welcomed and needed the additional income provided by the arrival of the sportsmen. With refrigerated railroad cars and cold-storage warehouses, market hunting was in its heyday. Market hunting ended when enough sportsmen rallied on the side of conservation and game laws were enacted by states and the federal government, which put an end to market hunting, while waterfowl hunting clubs continue today. This triology covers it all. All out-of-print books are in “as new condition,” which means the covers are bright and there are no damages to covers or text pages and show no shelf-ware. All Volumes of Waterfowling America are extremely hard to find. Volume Three is highly requested for purchase. No hardcovers were ever printed. PRICE is based on the book being out-of-print, rarity, collectability, demand, subject matter, limited first edition or an additional edition, softcover vs. hardcover with dust jacket, how hard is it to find one on the secondary/out-of-print market, and condition of book. PRICE: SOFTCOVER, $400, plus $6.00 for shipping and handling. 438 pages, color chapter pages and frontispiece, over 100 images, published 2008. In stock to purchase. TERMS OF PURCHASE: Every out-of-print book I sell is unconditionally guaranteed to meet your standards and expectations. If you are not completely satisfied, please contact the seller within seven days. If returned, book(s) must arrive in the “as new condition” in which it was purchased and mailed and must be returned within 7 days. Return postage is at purchaser’s expense.

For way to long, the history of waterfowling has been sorely neglected by historians. Well, that has been remedied with the publications of WATERFOWLING AMERICA. It all began when Kaneaster Hodges, Jr., my friend and frequent hunting partner, asked if I would like to read Edgar Queeny’s Prairie Wings. Only then did I realize what a wonderful history waterfowling entailed. From that time on, I could not read enough about the olden days and the old-time hunters. As I began to collect out-of-print hunting books, I met my hometown outdoorsman, Nash Buckingham. However, it was only through his books that I got to know him, because he was long deceased by the time my interest was piqued in the history of my sport. As the available books that I had not read began to dwindle, I began the search of my local, out-of-print newspapers. Further interest led me to out-of-print sporting journals and magazines such as American Field and Forest and Stream. At some point, I realized that I needed to write a history of waterfowling for the states of Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and the Boothill of Missouri, for which Memphis was the hub. Although Nash wrote eloquently about the olden days and the old-timers, there was much that he had left out or just didn’t know. I knew the task would be difficult, because so much of our history has been lost, as all of the old-timers have gone to the Happy Hunting Ground, and with them they took a large part of our history. Nevertheless, I accepted the challenge of writing The Golden Age of Waterfowling. This book is the writer’s attempt at telling some of their illustrious history and some of their glorious stories. It begins, for the most part, just before the Civil War and proceeds to the Golden Age of Waterfowling that lasted until the 1920s and takes us through the waterfowl “Great Depression” years of the 1930s and the Dust Bowl. In a few instances, I venture past this time frame when I had information that I thought would be beneficial to the reader. This book chronicles the waterfowling legacy for the states of Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, and southeastern Missouri. Marvel at the 143 old photographs of clubhouses, Swamp Angels, Sports, Paddlers, Pushers, Market hunters and other denizens of the swamps . Own a piece of history as this book will only appreciate in value. All out-of-print books are in “as new condition,” which means the covers are bright and there are no damages to covers or text pages or dust jacket if they have one, and show no shelf-ware. The softcover and, especially, the hardcover books are very hard to find and has been my most sought-after book which are out-of-print. PRICE is based on the book being out-of-print, rarity, collectability, demand, subject matter, limited first edition or an additional edition, softcover vs. hardcover with dust jacket, how hard is it to find one on the secondary/out-of-print market, and condition of book. PRICE: SOFTCOVER, 453 pages, over 100 images, 8.5 x 11, #725 of limited edition of 1,250 copies, signed and numbered, June 2001. Price $500 in “as new condition.” In stock to purchase. PRICE: SOFTCOVER, 453 pages, over 100 images, 8.5 x 11, edition of 2,500 copies printed June 2001 (actually June 2002). Clarification: This limited edition of 1,250 copies, signed and numbered, was printed June 2001. The edition of 2,500 copies were printed with the mistaken date of printing being June 2001; printing was done one year later on June 2002; the mistake was made because I didn't update my limited edition file to the correct printing date of June 2002 for the edition of 2,500 copies. PRICE: HARDCOVERS WITH DUST JACKET Very Rare, 453 pages, over 100 images, 8.5 x 11, limited first edition of 250 copies, signed and numbered, leatherette hard covers with gold-foil stamping spine and front, published June 2001. Price $700 in “as new condition.” Out of stock; None are in stock at at this time. Clarification: the hardcover books have a misprint which I did not realized until 2020 when I started this website. The limited edition page says “LIMITED FIRST EDITION. COPY NUMBER ________ OF TWELVE HUNDRED FIFTY COPIES” The last line is incorrect as there were only 250 copies printed in the limited first edition hardcovers so the total number sold was only 250 and not 1,250. Sorry for this mishap and confusion. After they were sold, no more hardcovers were printed; therefore, there was only one printing of the first edition. My two sons each have copies numbered 1/250 as I didn’t want one to have number 1 and the other to have number 2. Therefore there is no number 2 and the next number starts with 3/250.
