WILD PIGEONS

The Republican-Leader newspaper of Arcadia, Wisconsin, reported October 13, 1881:

The other day George Butcher, of Battle Creek, Michigan, was out hunting and fired into a flock of pigeons. He brought down a few and was surprised to find an oiled-silk bag tied to the leg of one bird, which on being opened, was found to contain the following note: “Lexington, Kentucky, May 21, 1881. This pigeon is one of a number caught by my brother in a net. I conceived the idea of fastening this note to it, and request the finder to write to Miss Eva Carroll, of Lexington, Kentucky.”
