Red Letter Days

Before life passed me by, I wanted to take a few moments from my busy family and emergency room life and write a few of the interesting stories that has happened to me during 40-plus years of hunting, mostly waterfowl. Who can forget their first hunting trip and the wonderful enjoyment and rapture they felt when entering the woods or hunting blind? Your Dad and, more than likely, your dog was by your side. It is a moment never to be captured again. It is one that sticks in my mind with vivid recall, never to go away, as long as I have my mental facitlities and love for the outdoors. I wanted to capture that moment of my First Hunt, along with many others that have given me enjoyment and have fulfilled my happiest days, while afield in search of inner meaning and warmth of God’s loving hand. In due time the baton was passed to me when I took Bryan and Chad on their first hunt. Nothing can replace the joys experienced on their first hunt and, in turn, the joy they will feel when they take their sons on their first hunt. Each dad experiences a different life that no succeeeding generagion can recapture. It is only through reading and listening to the old-timers that we can fully appreciate their stories and their lives. I will never be able to capture “grabbling” as experienced by my Dad and his brothers. Neither will I ever be an expert in squirrel hunting as Levi was. Their time has passed. My time is passing. No longer is there any virgin timber where at the age of ten with my neck bent backward to the point where I thought it would snap off, I searched the tops of those enormous trees looking for a squirrel. They are still there, though in reduced numbers, but the virgin timber is gone, never to be seen again. The last eleven stories are my attempt to relive the past with the old-timers, some that I knew and some I didn’t. Hopefully, the stories are told in a way they would have approved of. We, of my generation and my sons’ generation, owe these old-timers a great deal of thanks for preserving our heritage.
